Teh stage is set for a potentially impactful few days in Washington D.C., as leaders from the United States, Canada, and Mexico converge for the 2026 World Cup draw on Friday. Beyond the highly anticipated sporting event, the gathering presents a key opportunity for diplomatic and economic discussions, particularly surrounding the future of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Friday’s events will include the first in-person meeting between U.S. president Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, and also a meeting between Prime minister Trudeau and President sheinbaum, adding another layer of complexity to the already meaningful occasion.

The 2026 World Cup draw is set for Friday at noon Eastern Time (1 a.m. Saturday in Beijing) in Washington, D.C., and will feature a high-profile guest list. According to confirmation from FIFA on Thursday, United States President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum will all be in attendance. The three leaders are also scheduled to hold separate bilateral meetings during the event.

With the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) facing renewal discussions, the potential for trade talks alongside the World Cup festivities is drawing significant attention from global markets.

President Trump stated on Wednesday, according to reports from CCTV News, that the USMCA will either expire or be replaced with a new agreement with Mexico and Canada, adding that Mexico and Canada have been “taking advantage” of the United States.

First In-Person Meeting for U.S. and Mexican Leaders

Mexican President Sheinbaum confirmed during a Thursday press conference that she will travel to Washington, D.C. for her first face-to-face meeting with President Trump, where they will continue negotiations regarding tariffs between the two countries.

The meeting was originally planned to take place during the G7 summit in Canada in June, but Trump departed early due to escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.

Sheinbaum stated that during the “brief meeting” with Trump, she will seek resolutions related to issues concerning automobiles, steel, and aluminum. Security officials from both countries are also scheduled to meet next week in Mexico, signaling continued cooperation and mutual respect for sovereignty.

Sheinbaum also revealed plans to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau in Washington on Friday.

Canada Downplays Trade Talk Possibility

Compared to Mexico, trade negotiations between Canada and the United States have been stalled for over a month. President Trump halted talks on October 23rd in response to anger over retaliatory advertising funded by the province of Ontario.

Dominique Leblanc, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, stated on Thursday that Prime Minister Trudeau’s visit will focus solely on the World Cup draw and will not include trade discussions with President Trump. He also noted that there have been no discussions between officials from both countries regarding trade since late October.

However, Leblanc emphasized that Canada is prepared to resume trade talks with the United States, particularly concerning steel and aluminum tariffs.

Leblanc, currently visiting Mexico City, also announced that Canada and Mexico are exploring ways to deepen trade and investment cooperation. He is organizing what he described as “the largest Canadian trade mission to Mexico in history,” scheduled for February of next year, with over 400 companies already expressing interest.

Bonus: Will Trump Receive a “Peace Award”?

Adding an unusual element to Friday’s draw ceremony, FIFA will also be presenting a new award.

FIFA announced in November that it will be establishing the “FIFA Peace Award” – a new annual honor recognizing individuals who have “taken extraordinary and specific action to promote peace and unity around the world.” The award will be presented “on behalf of over 5 billion fans globally,” though the selection process remains unclear.

Given FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s public support for Trump receiving the Nobel Peace Prize just a day before the award ceremony in October, speculation is widespread that the award is intended for President Trump. The prediction platform Kalshi currently gives Trump a 91% probability of winning.
