World Mental Health Day: Experts Urge Self-Assessment Amid Rising Stress
As individuals navigate increasingly busy lives and global uncertainties, mental health professionals are emphasizing the importance of regular self-assessment, particularly on World Mental Health Day.
Experts note that many people operate on “autopilot,” potentially overlooking their own emotional well-being through overwork or distraction. “People may believe they are ‘fine’ while functioning on autopilot, overworking or numbing with social media doom scrolling, food, alcohol or even checking out with excessive sleep,” explained Dr. Urszula Klich, a clinical psychologist based in Atlanta. Self-awareness, they say, is crucial for early detection of stress and emotional imbalance, allowing for timely adjustments and fostering emotional intelligence. Resources like those offered by Mental Health America can provide structured screenings to aid in this process.
While temporary feelings of stress or low mood are normal reactions to life changes, persistent symptoms lasting beyond two weeks that interfere with daily functioning warrant attention. Dr. Ken Duckworth, chief medical officer of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, stated, “Finding life anxiety-provoking is a normal human experience,” but added that difficulty maintaining routines – such as work, parenting, or even basic self-care – signals a potential need for professional help. Untreated mental health conditions can significantly impact personal relationships and professional stability, making early intervention vital.
More severe indicators include worsening impairment, neglecting responsibilities, substance abuse, hygiene issues, or thoughts of self-harm. “Appropriate help is vital if mental health issues are escalating, and severe symptoms rarely improve without structured support,” Klich emphasized, adding that seeking help sooner rather than later can reduce the likelihood of hospitalization. For those in crisis, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7.
Health professionals recommend prioritizing healthy sleep and eating habits, engaging in purposeful activities, taking breaks from technology, and practicing mindfulness as ongoing strategies for maintaining mental well-being.
