Houston Startups Score Major Milestones, Finalists Named for 2025 Innovation Awards
Six Houston-based companies have been named finalists for the 2025 Scaleup of the Year award, recognizing significant recent achievements in funding, FDA approvals, and technological advancements.
Coya Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotechnology firm, received FDA acceptance this summer for its investigational new drug application for COYA-302, a treatment targeting neurodegenerative diseases like ALS and Alzheimer’s. The company, founded in 2021, has raised over $46 million through an IPO and subsequent funding rounds, demonstrating growing investor confidence in its approach to tackling these debilitating conditions. Advancements in neurodegenerative disease treatments are crucial as the global population ages and the prevalence of these illnesses increases.
Fervo Energy, focused on 24/7 carbon-free geothermal power, secured $205.6 million in capital to finance its Cape Station project in Utah, expected to generate 400 megawatts of clean energy by 2028. The company, now valued as a unicorn exceeding $1 billion, has also secured a major power purchase agreement with Shell. You can learn more about the potential of geothermal energy on the Department of Energy’s website.
Other finalists include Koda Health, which developed an advance care planning platform integrating with electronic health records; Mati Carbon, a climatetech company winning a $50 million XPRIZE for carbon removal; Molecule Software, an energy trading risk management platform; and Utility Global, pioneering low-cost, clean hydrogen production. The winners will be announced at the Houston Innovation Awards on November 13th at Greentown Labs, and tickets are currently on sale.
