Gaza Neighborhood of Shijaiya Reduced to Ruins by Israeli Military Operations
The Israeli military has systematically demolished large sections of the Shijaiya neighborhood in Gaza City, leveling buildings and infrastructure in what officials say is an effort to eliminate Hamas militant bases.
An Associated Press photographer accompanied Israeli forces on a tour of the area today, witnessing widespread destruction. Buildings stood as hollow shells or were reduced to rubble, with the landscape resembling a “terror-free zone,” according to Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, a military spokesman. “What we need to do in these areas is we want to make sure it’s a terror-free zone, that Hamas does not return to this area,” he stated. The systematic destruction of neighborhoods like Shijaiya raises concerns about the long-term viability of civilian life in Gaza.
The obliteration of Shijaiya, located near the border with Israel, is part of a broader campaign that has targeted areas in northern Gaza, Rafah, and Khan Younis since January. Military officials claim militants were actively attempting to re-establish weaponry in the area even recently. One soldier was observed wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the slogan “Hamas Hunting Club, Happy Hunting” alongside a graphic depicting a military boot crushing a militant’s skeleton. Shoshani explained that reconstruction will be impossible until the area is cleared of tunnels and militant infrastructure, stating, “An area cannot be rebuilt if it’s a terror infrastructure and you cannot rebuild an area if there’s a tunnel 100 meters deep beneath the house or beneath the rubble.” The destruction follows the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, which triggered the current military response. The Associated Press is providing ongoing coverage of the conflict, and officials indicated operations to secure the area will continue.
