The ongoing scarcity of key computer components has led some to explore unconventional sources for parts, with one Reddit user discovering a surprising haul at a local recycling center. Amidst global supply chain challenges impacting the PC gaming market, finding components like RAM modules has grow increasingly challenging and expensive.

The trend of seeking used hardware isn’t fresh – previously, graphics cards and even entire computer systems were often found through unaware sellers. Now, with memory modules in short supply, they’ve become a particularly sought-after item. A user on the PC Master Race subreddit, ‘ringosbigf****ngnose’, recently shared their unexpected uncover: 64GB of DDR4 RAM in multiple discarded computers at a dump.

$500 Worth of Discarded RAM

Techspot also reported on the discovery, linking to the original Reddit thread. According to the user, they routinely visit the area where people dispose of old PC components, specifically the container designated for such items. During their latest search for older or retro components, they uncovered 64GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4 RAM, complete with RGB lighting.

The user intends to keep some of the RAM to upgrade their current system – a Core i7-7700 with a GTX 1070 OC – which they also plan to replace eventually. Recognizing the value of the find, they’ve listed 32GB (2x16GB) of the memory for sale to recoup some funds.

Although the story is remarkable, experts caution against relying on similar tactics. Components found in recycling centers are often in unreliable condition and many facilities have rules prohibiting the removal of items. This discovery underscores the challenges consumers face in acquiring essential PC hardware as global shortages continue.
