Ceasefire in Gaza Threatened as Israel Responds to Attacks from Rafah
A fragile ceasefire in Gaza is under threat today after Israel responded to attacks by Hamas militants in the Rafah area, escalating violence less than a week after the agreement took effect.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that its troops operating in Rafah came under fire from “terrorists” using gunfire and an anti-tank missile. Following the attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed “strong action” against targets in the Gaza Strip, according to his office’s post on X. The IDF subsequently launched strikes to dismantle tunnel shafts and other Hamas infrastructure, characterizing the incident as a “blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement.”
Hamas issued a statement claiming it was disconnected from groups in Rafah and unaware of any clashes, asserting its continued commitment to the ceasefire. However, Hamas official Izzat al-Rishq accused Israel of “violating the deal and fabricating pretexts to justify its crimes,” as reported by the BBC. This escalation comes amid a crackdown by Hamas against rival militias within Gaza, though a direct connection to today’s violence remains unclear. The U.S. State Department had previously expressed concerns, reporting “credible reports” of Hamas planning attacks against Palestinian civilians that would breach the ceasefire terms.
Yesterday, an Israeli attack on a bus in Gaza City resulted in the deaths of 11 members of a family, including seven children, as they returned to their damaged home. Israeli forces stated the bus had crossed a designated boundary and that troops faced an “imminent threat” before firing. The recent ceasefire, brokered by the U.S., led to the release of all remaining 20 living Israeli hostages held by Hamas in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners; however, sixteen Israeli hostages remain deceased in Gaza. The conflict began after the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,144 Israelis, and has since claimed the lives of over 67,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The IDF stated it is continuing a series of strikes against Hamas in southern Gaza, and Israeli officials have indicated further action will be taken in response to the alleged ceasefire violations.
