Artificial intelligence continues to reshape the gaming landscape, prompting both excitement and debate among developers and players alike. Following recent discussions about Larian Studios‘ potential use of AI, industry giants like CD Projekt Red are clarifying their approaches to the technology. The Polish studio confirmed it is currently leveraging AI to improve productivity, but maintains that fully AI-generated games remain firmly in the realm of science fiction, even as the industry grapples with ethical considerations highlighted by recent controversies surrounding AI-assisted game growth [[1]].

The intersection of gaming and artificial intelligence is once again drawing significant attention, following reports of Larian Studios’ exploration of the technology. Recent interpretations of comments made by studio CEO Swen Vincke led to speculation about the potential use of generative AI in concept art, though those claims remain unconfirmed. This discussion arrives as other major game developers are also beginning to assess the possibilities – and limitations – of AI integration.

CD Projekt Red, the studio behind The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077, is among them. During a recent earnings call (available here, as reported by GamingBolt), CDPR co-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed the company is utilizing AI, but primarily to enhance productivity. The studio has no current plans to replace employees with AI or to have the technology independently create games.

“As for reducing headcount with AI – I don’t think so. We’re using AI mostly in the productivity space, and that’s where we’re seeing the biggest benefits. Those benefits are real and meaningful, but it’s not – and I don’t think there’s a situation where – AI can just sit down and make a game,” Nowakowski stated. “That doesn’t mean it’s useless, but it won’t be something like ‘The Witcher 5’ or ‘The Witcher 6.’”

The increasing adoption of AI tools by game studios is likely to keep the technology at the forefront of industry conversation. This comes after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 recently had a Game of the Year award revoked due to the use of generative AI during its development. The incident underscores the ongoing debate surrounding AI in creative fields, and whether its use will become more widely accepted as more studios integrate it into their workflows remains to be seen. The debate highlights the complex ethical and creative considerations surrounding AI’s role in game development.
