OpenAI Prioritizes Growth Over Profitability, Unveils New AI Tools
OpenAI today announced a suite of new developer tools, including Sora 2, GPT-5 Pro, and AgentKit, while reaffirming its commitment to rapid expansion and investment rather than immediate profitability.
During its annual DevDay event in San Francisco, CEO Sam Altman stated that generating revenue and achieving profitability are “not in his top 10 concerns” at this stage, despite acknowledging the eventual need for a profitable business model. He emphasized the company’s current focus on building and scaling its AI capabilities, echoing similar sentiments expressed earlier this year to CNBC. The company currently boasts 800 million weekly active users, a significant increase from 700 million reported last month.
Key announcements included the general availability of Codex, OpenAI’s software engineering agent, and the launch of App SDK, allowing developers to integrate ChatGPT-powered chat directly into their applications. A demonstration showcased the App SDK’s capabilities with Canva, generating poster mock-ups based on user prompts. Altman also highlighted unexpected users leveraging OpenAI’s tools, such as an 89-year-old Japanese man who has built 11 iPhone apps for elderly users, demonstrating the broadening accessibility of AI-powered development. This push towards wider accessibility comes as OpenAI continues to navigate concerns around copyright and responsible AI use, following the recent release of its TikTok-style Sora app.
The event concluded with a conversation between Altman and Jony Ive, the former Apple design chief who now oversees creative and design responsibilities at OpenAI, following a significant investment in Ive’s AI devices startup, io. Altman stated, “the goal is to make AI useful to everyone,” signaling a continued focus on democratizing access to advanced AI technologies. OpenAI officials indicated further updates and refinements to the newly announced tools are expected in the coming months.
