Apple Launches Digital ID in Apple Wallet, Starting with TSA Checkpoints
Apple today announced the release of Digital ID, a new feature allowing users to create a digital version of their identification using their U.S. passport and present it via iPhone or Apple Watch, potentially streamlining identity verification processes.
The new Digital ID will initially be available for beta testing at over 250 U.S. airport TSA checkpoints for domestic travel, with plans for broader acceptance at businesses and organizations in the future. This offers a convenient alternative for individuals who may not have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID. “With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. Users can add a Digital ID to Apple Wallet by scanning their passport’s photo page and chip, completing a selfie verification process, and performing a series of facial movements.
Presenting a Digital ID requires double-clicking the side or Home button to access Apple Wallet, selecting the Digital ID, and holding the iPhone or Apple Watch near an identity reader while authenticating with Face ID or Touch ID. Apple emphasizes that the feature is designed with privacy in mind, ensuring data is encrypted and that only necessary information is shared with user authorization. More information about Apple’s security features can be found on their security website. The rollout of digital IDs represents a significant step towards a more digital future for personal identification, aligning with broader government initiatives like the Transportation Security Administration’s efforts to enhance security screening.
Digital ID joins the existing ability to store driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet, currently available in 12 states and Puerto Rico, as well as internationally in Japan. Apple confirmed that Digital ID is *not* a replacement for a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel. Officials stated that further expansion of Digital ID acceptance will be announced as it becomes available.
