Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers Extend Win Streak to 14 with 3-1 Victory Over Hillsborough

The Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers continued their dominant season yesterday, defeating Hillsborough Community College 3-1 in Fort Myers to extend their winning streak to 14 games and improve to an 18-1 overall record.

The Buccaneers overcame a slow start, dropping the first set 27-25 despite a late rally. They responded strongly, winning the next three sets 25-15, 25-16, and 25-20, respectively. Three FSW players – Magi Milicevic, Patrycja Labucka, and Bethyna Kayser – achieved career-high kill counts during the match, with Milicevic leading the team with 18 kills and a .390 hitting percentage. Irina Makinen contributed 47 assists, and Sarah Webb recorded 18 digs and a team-best four aces.

Hillsborough started the first set strong, but a series of hitting errors ultimately cost them the opening game. The Buccaneers’ improved performance in subsequent sets was fueled by aggressive serving and strong blocking, as evidenced by the combined efforts of Letizia Okonofua and Valentina Zevallos. This victory solidifies FSW’s position as a leading contender in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) – you can find more information about NJCAA volleyball here.

The win improves FSW’s record to 7-0 in Citrus Conference play, maintaining their lead in the league standings, while Hillsborough falls to 8-10 overall and 2-5 in conference action. The Buccaneers’ consistent success this season highlights the growing strength of the FSW athletic program and its impact on the local community; you can find more information about FSW Athletics on their official website.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Saturday, hosting Santa Fe College at Suncoast Credit Union Arena, with a 2 PM first serve, and are encouraging fans to bring wrapped candy for donation to the James Stephens Elementary Fall Festival.
