Disability Employment Awareness Month Proclaimed Across California, Nationally Recognized

California Governor Gavin Newsom has officially proclaimed October as Disability Employment Awareness Month, joining a nationwide effort to highlight the contributions of workers with disabilities and promote inclusive hiring practices.

The proclamation, issued today, October 7, 2025, emphasizes the importance of fostering a workforce where individuals of all abilities can thrive. Similar observances are underway in communities across the country, including Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where Ascend Services is marking the month with special events, and Mercer County, Ohio, where the Board of Developmental Disabilities has announced its participation. Organizations like the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy are providing resources and support for employers.

Throughout October, various initiatives will focus on connecting disabled adults with employment opportunities and raising awareness about the benefits of inclusive workplaces. Radio Mankato reported yesterday on the efforts of MRCI, with CEO Casey Westhoff and Director of Day and Employment Services, Nate Lotton, underscoring the value of diverse talent. This increased focus on disability employment comes as the labor force participation rate for people with disabilities remains lower than that of people without disabilities, highlighting the need for continued progress.

Officials encourage businesses and organizations to review their hiring practices and actively seek to include qualified candidates with disabilities. Further information on Disability Employment Awareness Month and related resources can be found on the State of California website.

Governor Newsom’s office stated that continued collaboration between state agencies, employers, and disability advocacy groups will be crucial to building a more equitable and inclusive workforce.
