Dubai – An Egyptian professor at Stanford University has been awarded this year’s Great Arab Minds Engineering and Technology Prize, recognizing his groundbreaking contributions to the fields of network information theory and digital communications.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced the award to Professor Abbas El Gamal. The recognition highlights the growing prominence of Arab researchers in cutting-edge technological fields and challenges the perception of the region as solely a consumer of technology.
Professor El Gamal played a pivotal role in the development of CMOS image sensors, which are now integral to modern smartphone cameras and imaging equipment. His discoveries in field programmable gate arrays and circuit design have spurred significant advancements in the computing landscape. He has authored over 230 research papers throughout his career.
“This achievement proves that the Arab people are not merely consumers of technology, but are capable of creating it and shaping the scientific future,” Sheikh Mohammed said in a statement. The award underscores the UAE’s commitment to fostering innovation and recognizing scientific excellence within the Arab world.
