NordicTrack Rowing Machines Recalled Due to Fire Hazard
More than 40,000 NordicTrack rowing machines have been recalled in the United States and Canada after reports of the screen console overheating and posing a fire risk.
The voluntary recall, announced today by iFit, affects approximately 44,800 units sold in the U.S. and 700 in Canada. The recalled machines, model number NTRW19147 (including variations NTRW19147.0, NTRW19147.1, NTRW19147.2 and NTRW19147.3), were sold nationwide between November 2018 and April 2022 through retailers including Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Amazon, as well as directly through nordictrack.com. Eight incidents have been reported, including two fires and six instances of the rower screens smoking or melting, resulting in at least $6,000 in property damage.
iFit is urging customers to immediately stop using the recalled rowing machines and unplug them. Electrical faults, poor ventilation, and overheating components are potential causes of screen console overheating, according to experts at the U.S. Fire Administration. This recall highlights the importance of regularly checking exercise equipment for potential safety issues, as a 2024 survey by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission found exercise equipment sent nearly half a million Americans to the emergency room in 2022.
The company is offering a free installation of a new screen console to affected customers, which can be scheduled through the iFit recall website; refunds are not being offered. iFit, which also owns ProForm and Freemotion, is coordinating the recall and providing further information to customers.
Customers with questions or needing assistance scheduling a console replacement are encouraged to contact iFit directly.
