Bronx Fire Explosion Injures Seven New York City Firefighters

Seven New York City firefighters were injured yesterday evening when an explosion occurred while responding to a fire involving trash and vehicles in the Bronx, officials reported.

The incident took place shortly after 7 p.m. on Westchester Avenue, where crews were battling a blaze that had ignited garbage and several cars. According to New York City Fire Chief John Esposito, “There was a lot of garbage and debris on the sidewalk that was on fire. There were a couple of cars that were on fire,” before “some sort of explosion, a large fireball” erupted. Five of the firefighters sustained burns to their hands and faces, and three were transported to a hospital for treatment; thankfully, none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

“But they have some serious burns, and we’ll be obviously praying for them,” Esposito said. A bystander captured the explosion on video, showing a large fireball shooting into the air. Dr. Sheldon Teperman, a surgeon at Jacobi Medical Center, stated the firefighters are expected to recover and noted their concern was for their fellow firefighters and families, calling them “New York’s bravest.” This incident underscores the inherent dangers faced by first responders in New York City and beyond. The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation. Officials have not released further details at this time, but will continue to update the public as information becomes available.
