Polish President Karol nawrocki has significantly altered his planned trip to Hungary, now limiting his attendance to the Visegrád Group summit in Esztergom. The shift follows Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s controversial meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday, a move that has prompted a strong response from Warsaw and raised questions about the alignment of the two nations’ foreign policies. The decision underscores growing tensions within the Visegrád Group and highlights Poland’s concerns regarding Hungary’s relationship with Russia as the war in Ukraine continues.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki has scaled back his planned visit to Hungary, opting to attend only the Visegrád Group presidential summit in Esztergom. The decision comes following a recent visit by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to Moscow, a move that has raised concerns among Poland’s leadership.
Marcin Przydacz, head of the President’s International Policy Bureau, announced the change in plans via social media, citing the context of Orbán’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as the reason for the adjustment.
Orbán met with Putin in Moscow on Friday, November 30, 2025, for discussions that have drawn scrutiny from Warsaw. The move highlights a divergence in approaches to Russia between the two allied nations, and underscores growing regional tensions.

Originally, Nawrocki’s itinerary included two days in Hungary: the Visegrád Group summit in Esztergom on Wednesday, followed by official talks in Budapest on Thursday with Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok and Prime Minister Orbán. The revised schedule eliminates the Budapest portion of the trip.
Sikorski calls for PiS politicians to return home
In a related development, Radosław Sikorski, Poland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has publicly called on politicians from the Law and Justice (PiS) party currently in Hungary to return to Poland.
Marcin Romanowski has been staying in Hungary for an extended period, reportedly seeking to evade Polish justice authorities and charges related to the Justice Fund scandal. He is accused of being involved in an organized crime group and manipulating funding competitions.
Zbigniew Ziobro, another prominent figure from PiS, may also soon face legal challenges. Investigators intend to bring 26 charges against the former Minister of Justice, primarily concerning alleged abuses related to the Justice Fund, including accusations of leading an organized criminal group. The Sejm has already approved the lifting of his parliamentary immunity, potentially paving the way for his arrest.

If the court approves the prosecution’s request, a European Arrest Warrant is likely to be issued. An arraignment hearing regarding the former Minister of Justice is scheduled for the second half of December.
Mentzen criticizes Nawrocki’s decision. “We have some common interests”
Sławomir Mentzen, leader of the Confederation party, responded to President Nawrocki’s move, expressing dissatisfaction with the cancellation of the planned meeting between the Polish and Hungarian leaders.
“Recently, in addition to Orbán, Vladimir Putin has met with Donald Trump, Xi Jinping, and Narendra Modi – the leaders of the world’s most powerful nations. Will we now boycott them all? Or would we boycott peace talks with Russia if someone miraculously invited us to the table?” Mentzen wrote on Facebook.

“We have some common interests with Orbán, and it’s worth protecting them. I don’t understand this demonstrative cancellation of the meeting with him. If we won’t even talk to Hungary, with whom in the European Union can we reach an agreement?” Mentzen concluded.
Ukrainian officials praise Polish President’s move
The Ukrainian government, meanwhile, has welcomed President Nawrocki’s decision to shorten his visit to Hungary.
“This is a truly good decision. It demonstrates Poland’s principled stance and strong sense of solidarity, reaffirming its commitment to the unity and security of Europe at a critical moment. Thank you, Poland,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha wrote on X.
