Following a resurgence of interest in classic shoot ’em up titles, German studio Kritzelkratz 3000, in partnership wiht ININ Games, is set to release a brand new installment in the iconic R-Type franchise. R-Type dimensions III, slated for a May 2026 release on PC, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox, represents a full rebuild of the series with modernized visuals and gameplay-not a simple compilation or remake. The project aims to revitalize the beloved series for a new generation while retaining elements that made the original games so impactful.

A new entry may be on the horizon for the shoot ‘em up genre in 2026, following a period of strong performance from Japanese role-playing and side-scrolling action games. German studio Kritzelkratz 3000, in partnership with Japanese publisher ININ Games, is reviving the classic R-Type franchise – not with another compilation or remake, but with a completely new installment, R-Type Dimensions III, designed to modernize the series while staying true to its roots.

The game is slated for release on PC, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox in May. According to a press release, R-Type Dimensions III is “completely reimagined with cutting-edge visuals and sound, expanded game modes, and a host of new features designed to present a modern take on the iconic R-Type experience.

The title will also feature a cooperative mode, two camera modes – standard and “狂” (Mad) – and the option to switch between 2D and 3D graphics to suit player preference. The announcement has sparked hope for a successful launch and could inspire other developers to revisit beloved franchises. Fans are eager to see potential new installments or remakes of titles like Life Force (also known as Salamander), Zone of the Enders, and Thunder Force IV.
