Rui En Reveals Battle with Depression

Singaporean actress Rui En has publicly shared her recent experience with depression, detailing a six-month struggle that began in 2024.

The 44-year-old described hitting an emotional low point last year, experiencing a level of despair and helplessness she hadn’t felt in previous encounters with the condition. According to the actress, this episode was marked by persistent insomnia and a loss of appetite. “It didn’t become serious overnight; it was gradual,” Rui En explained. “From the time I realised my mood was low to when I came out of it, it took about six months.”

Rui En also spoke about the physical toll the depression took on her, noting a constant tightness and pain in her chest. “My chest was tight all the time, it was painful,” she said. “So I’m really grateful that I recovered within half a year.” Her openness comes as mental health awareness gains increasing importance in Singapore and globally; according to the World Health Organization, depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide.

The actress stated her motivation for speaking out is to promote mental health awareness and to reassure others facing similar challenges that they are not alone. Resources for mental health support in Singapore can be found at the National Mental Health website, and understanding the signs of depression is a crucial first step towards seeking help.

Rui En is expected to continue advocating for mental wellbeing, hoping to destigmatize conversations around mental health.
