SALEM — As fall settles in, the city’s slate of annual fall programming is also approaching.

The annual festivities begin with Scarecrow Shenanigans from Oct. 5 through 12, which sees participants create customized family-friendly scarecrows for display at the library and downtown during the week of Quakerfest.

Scarecrow frames will be available for pickup at the Salem Public Library or Salem Area Chamber of Commerce during normal business hours, and completed scarecrows must be turned in to the library by 5 p.m. Oct. 11 unless they are being displayed downtown. Anybody who wants to keep their scarecrow must pick them up from the library by the end of the day Oct. 18.

All participants will also be entered into a drawing to win prizes provided by the chamber of commerce. For any question or additional information about scarecrow shenanigans call Angela Vaughn at 330-332-0042 extension 260.

Quakerfest itself will be held from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Oct. 11 and will stretch throughout the downtown area and promises fun for the entire family. Vendors interested in participating in Quakerfest should contact the chamber of commerce for the registration form by email at info@salemohiochamber.org or by phone at 330-337-3473.

Following Quakerfest families can enjoy the Halloween spirit early with the 10th annual Trail of Treats presented by the Salem Parks Department, Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation, and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Trail of Treats will be held at Waterworth Memorial Park from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 12 this year and has no cost for entry.

In the parks commission’s Aug. 24 meeting, Parks Director Kelli Pastore said that there were already 50 groups signed up to distribute candy, and that she expected more to sign up as the Trail of Treats draws nearer.

Before the trail gets underway, there will be a costume contest at the Orashan Band Shell from 2 to 3 p.m., with prizes awarded in five categories including: best overall, scariest, funniest, most creative, and best group. No advance registration is required to participate in the costume contest.
