As the 34th Southeast Asian Games approach in Thailand this December, the region’s premier sporting event continues a decades-long tradition of athletic competition and national pride. The SEA Games, first held in 1958, showcase the talent of 11 Southeast Asian nations, fostering camaraderie alongside fierce rivalry. But beyond the sporting spectacle, a clear hierarchy has emerged over the Games’ 33 iterations – a historical dominance reflected in the medal counts.

The Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games), the premier multi-sport event in Southeast Asia, is a biennial competition featuring 11 member nations of ASEAN. The Games showcase athletic talent across a wide range of disciplines and consistently draw significant regional attention.

Originally known as the Asian Peninsular Games, or SEAP Games, the competition was first conceived by Luang Sukhum Nayapradit, Vice President of the Thai Olympic Committee.

Throughout its history, the SEA Games has been held 33 times. The next edition is scheduled to take place in Thailand from December 9-20, 2025.
