Gaza Death Toll Reaches 81 Following Overnight Israeli Strikes

The death toll in Gaza has risen to 81 following overnight Israeli airstrikes, according to hospital officials, marking a significant escalation in the conflict and a serious challenge to the current ceasefire agreement.

Hospital officials reported a surge in casualties today, with the Shifa Hospital in Gaza City receiving 21 additional bodies, including seven women and six children. Director Mohammed Abu Selmia stated that many of the 45 wounded currently under their care, 20 of whom are children, are in critical condition, and the death toll is expected to continue to rise. Earlier reports indicated at least 60 people were killed in strikes across Gaza, particularly in Deir al-Balah, Khan Younis, and central Gaza. These strikes came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered “powerful strikes” in response to accusations that Hamas violated the ceasefire.

The escalation follows an incident in Rafah, where an Israeli soldier, Master Sgt. Yona Efraim Feldbaum, 37, was killed by what the Israeli military described as “enemy fire.” U.S. President Donald Trump defended Israel’s actions, stating they were justified in responding to the attack. Hamas has denied involvement in the shooting and accused Israel of violating the ceasefire, calling the Israeli response a “blatant violation” of the agreement. The fragile ceasefire, initially established on October 10th, aimed to facilitate the release of hostages held by Hamas; the ongoing violence threatens to derail these efforts. Israeli officials shared a drone video they claim shows the staging of the discovery of partial remains of a hostage, further fueling tensions. The Israeli military stated it would continue to uphold the ceasefire but would respond firmly to any violations. The United States was notified before the strikes were launched, according to U.S. officials. Hamas has delayed handing over the body of another hostage in response to the strikes.

Israeli forces will continue to uphold the ceasefire agreement but will respond firmly to any violation of the deal, officials said.
