Sumo Wrestling Coach Under Investigation Following Allegations of Abuse

A former sumo wrestling grand champion, now a coach, is facing scrutiny after allegations of physical abuse against a current wrestler. The Japan Sumo Association has begun an investigation into the claims involving Isegahama Oyakata, formerly known as Takanoharu and wrestler Hakunofuji.

Isegahama Oyakata admitted to the association that he engaged in inappropriate conduct, stating, “I took actions that lacked responsibility.” He has apologized to his wrestlers and is awaiting a decision from the association regarding potential disciplinary action. The incident reportedly occurred on February 24, 2026, at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo during preparations for the upcoming March tournament.

The allegations center around a physical altercation with Hakunofuji, a 22-year-vintage wrestler from Tottori Prefecture. Hakunofuji joined the Isegahama stable in April 2024 after his previous stable, Miyagino, closed. He has quickly risen through the ranks, achieving a winning record in four consecutive tournaments and currently holds the rank of West Maegashira 7 for the March tournament.

According to reports, Isegahama Oyakata self-reported the incident to the Sumo Association and underwent questioning alongside Hakunofuji and another wrestler who witnessed the event. This type of incident is rare in the world of sumo wrestling, and the association’s compliance committee will investigate and recommend a course of action.

The situation highlights the importance of athlete safety and ethical conduct within professional sports. The Sumo Association’s response will likely set a precedent for handling similar incidents in the future.

Isegahama Oyakata’s career record includes 144 wins and 89 losses across 20 tournaments. His highest rank achieved as a wrestler was Ozeki. He became a coach in 2024.
