Oregon to Hold Statewide Earthquake Drill Today

Oregonians will participate in the annual Great Oregon ShakeOut drill today, October 16, 2025, at 10:16 AM local time, to practice earthquake safety procedures.

The drill encourages individuals, schools, and businesses to practice the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” method, a recommended safety response during an earthquake. Participants are asked to register their involvement at ShakeOut.org/Oregon and share photos using the hashtag #OregonShakeOut2025. This annual event is crucial for a state located in a seismically active zone, preparing residents for a potential major earthquake.

In addition to the drill, new earthquake preparedness video games – Cascadia 9.1 and Cascadia 9.2 – developed by Dr. Elizabeth Safran and her research team, are now available to the public at Cascadia9game.org. These games aim to engage young adults in learning about earthquake preparedness and motivate them to take action. Community partners are encouraged to share these resources leading up to and following the ShakeOut event.

Officials from the Oregon Department of Emergency Management emphasize the importance of community preparedness and encourage residents to familiarize themselves with earthquake safety protocols. Further information and resources can be found on the state’s official website.
