Iowa State Welcomes Transfer Jada Williams, Poised to Lead Women’s Basketball Team
AMES, Iowa — Jada Williams, a 20-year-old transfer student and highly-rated basketball recruit, is expected to be a key player for the 14th-ranked Iowa State Cyclones this season, bringing both on-court talent and a significant social media presence to the program.
Williams, who previously played at Arizona, purchased a four-bedroom home in Ames and is adjusting to life as a student-athlete and homeowner. She started 58 of 64 games for the Wildcats, leading them in scoring last season, but sought a change of environment for her mental well-being. “I’m in a way better spot here,” Williams said, adding that the Iowa State coaching staff “believe in all my abilities and they just encourage me.”
Beyond basketball, Williams is a prominent online influencer with nearly 1.6 million followers across Instagram, TikTok, and X. Her name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals are estimated to be among the highest in women’s college athletics, potentially exceeding $500,000 annually, according to Opendorse, a leading NIL marketplace. This influx of revenue is changing the landscape of college sports, allowing athletes to profit from their personal brands. She plans to turn the home she purchased into an Airbnb after her college career.
Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly anticipates Williams’ scoring ability will be a significant asset, noting that she is likely to score more frequently than her predecessor at point guard. Teammate Addy Brown, who has known Williams since childhood, believes she will thrive in the Iowa State system, stating, “There are a lot of things as a player that can limit your game when you’re not in a system that maybe fits you, and I think that was kind of her situation at Arizona.” Williams herself is focused on proving her previous performance was not a decline, saying, “Everybody said Jada fell off, so now I’m trying to show you that I didn’t fall off.”
The team expects Williams to help challenge for the Big 12 women’s basketball championship and continue their streak of NCAA Tournament appearances.
