A contestant on the Dutch survival reality show *Expeditie Robinson* recently shared a deeply personal story about grappling with childhood trauma. Tobias revealed to fellow contestants that the unexpected death of his brother at age eighteen continues to fuel an underlying anxiety and fear of the uncontrollable. Now, as he navigates the challenges of the competition, Tobias is confronting these long-held emotions while attempting to push his personal boundaries .
“I was very afraid of dying in my sleep”
Tobias experienced profound loss at the age of eight when his older brother passed away at eighteen. “My parents saw it coming, because he had a very weak heart, but I didn’t know that,” he explained. “So, for me, my brother was just suddenly gone.”
The death deeply affected Tobias. “I was so shocked by the fact that someone can just disappear like that, that I fell into a kind of state where I wanted to control the situation,” he said.
“When I went to sleep, my parents had to say ‘until tomorrow,’ because then they had promised there would be a tomorrow. I was very afraid of dying in my sleep,” he continued.
The trauma continues to cause anxiety, though Tobias now has a better understanding of its origins. “I think it’s mainly the fear of not being able to control things and surrendering to them, because I was so shocked by that as a child. I haven’t really gotten over it,” he stated.
Fellow contestant Mátyás Bittenbinder was moved by Tobias’s story and praised him. “I think you can be incredibly proud of yourself. How you handled it, how much you’ve done, how you’ve overcome it. Do you feel that way yourself?” he asked. But Tobias doesn’t recognize the feeling of pride. “It can be contentment, that’s the highest I can get.”
Participating in Expeditie Robinson (Expedition Robinson) represents a significant step for Tobias. However, his other brother initially expressed skepticism. “He said, ‘That’s not for you, you’re going to hate it, you’re not going to be good at it,’” Tobias recounted. “Then I explained to him that I’m doing it precisely because I think all those things and that it’s good to put yourself in a situation you think will be terrible.”
Shortly before his departure for the island, Tobias received a message from his brother. “Go where no Camman has gone before,” Tobias shared, referencing the message’s content. Those words remained in the back of his mind during the expedition as “a kind of mantra.”
However, Tobias is now ready to leave the competition. “I think I’ve come quite far, but it just doesn’t stop. I just want to go home. They just won’t vote me out,” he said with a laugh and a tear.
Tobias was not sent home this week either. Following a calculated plan by Nordin Blessing, Kevin Hassing was eliminated.
Expeditie Robinson airs every Sunday at 20:00 on RTL 4.
A contestant on the Dutch reality show Expeditie Robinson (Expedition Robinson) has opened up about the lasting impact of childhood trauma stemming from the sudden loss of his brother. Tobias, a participant on the program, revealed a deep-seated fear of death that originated when he was eight years old.
According to Tobias, his older brother died unexpectedly at eighteen due to a pre-existing heart condition. Unaware of the severity of his brother’s health, Tobias was left reeling from the abrupt loss. This experience triggered a need for control, manifesting as a fear of dying in his sleep, requiring reassurance from his parents each night.
“I was very afraid of dying in my sleep,” Tobias explained, recounting how he needed his parents to promise him “until tomorrow” before he could rest. The underlying anxiety, he believes, stems from a fear of the uncontrollable and a sense of helplessness.
Fellow contestant Mátyás Bittenbinder acknowledged Tobias’s vulnerability and praised his resilience. While Tobias struggles to embrace feelings of pride, he finds contentment in pushing his boundaries.
Tobias’s decision to participate in Expeditie Robinson, a survival-based competition, was initially met with doubt from his brother, who questioned his suitability for the challenge. Tobias, however, saw the show as an opportunity to confront his fears and step outside his comfort zone. He carried a message from his brother – “Go where no Camman has gone before” – as a guiding principle throughout the expedition.
Despite his efforts, Tobias expressed a desire to leave the competition, stating, “I think I’ve come quite far, but it just doesn’t stop. I just want to go home.” This week, however, he remained on the show while Kevin Hassing was eliminated following a strategic move by Nordin Blessing.
Expeditie Robinson airs Sundays at 20:00 on RTL 4.
