Following a contentious election cycle marked by sharp rhetoric, President Donald Trump has signaled a potential shift in approach toward New York City’s incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani. Trump’s stated willingness to meet with Mamdani-who unseated a long-time incumbent-represents a surprising growth given the president’s repeated criticisms of the Democrat during the campaign. The possibility of collaboration between the two leaders arrives as Mamdani prepares for a trip to Washington D.C., and could reshape the dynamic between the White House and one of the nation’s largest cities.
WASHINGTON DC – President Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to meet with New York City’s incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, who is planning a trip to Washington D.C. The potential for a meeting between the two leaders signals a possible easing of tensions after months of public clashes, and comes as the United States grapples with increasing political polarization.
Trump stated on Sunday, November 16, 2025, that he and Mamdani would “look for common ground” during the meeting. This represents a significant shift in tone from the campaign trail, where Trump repeatedly attacked Mamdani’s political ideology.
During the recent mayoral campaign, Trump frequently labeled Mamdani as a “communist” and warned that his election would “destroy” New York City. He also threatened to deport Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and became a U.S. citizen through naturalization, and to cut federal funding to the city.
However, following Mamdani’s victory, Trump has opened the door to communication. “The Mayor of New York wants to meet with us,” Trump told reporters after spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort. “We’re going to work out the best solutions for New York.”
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt clarified that the president was referring to Mamdani, but confirmed that no date for a meeting has been set yet.
Trump seeks middle ground
Before returning to Washington, Trump said he would “set something up” regarding a meeting with the newly elected mayor. The development underscores the complex relationship between the federal government and major cities, particularly those led by opposing political parties.
Mamdani’s camp has emphasized the importance of a positive working relationship with the White House for the future of New York City. In his victory speech, Mamdani stated his desire for New York to serve as a model for the nation in addressing presidential policies.
Despite his earlier rhetoric, Mamdani also indicated a willingness to collaborate with the administration for the benefit of his constituents. Speaking a day after his election victory, while outlining plans to make New York “immune to Trump,” he affirmed his readiness to work with anyone in the interest of the city’s residents.
