A 65-year-old Sudanese woman battling breast cancer is facing a critical disruption in her treatment due to financial hardship. Known as Um Majed, she requires ongoing chemotherapy, medication, and regular follow-up care at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi, but her family is unable to afford the renewal of her health insurance, which is essential to access a cancer patient assistance program.

The family needs approximately 19,000 AED (United Arab Emirates Dirham) to renew the insurance policy and ensure Um Majed can continue receiving life-saving treatment. Access to consistent cancer care is vital for improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

Her husband, Abu Majed, is appealing to charitable individuals for financial assistance, fearing a lapse in treatment could jeopardize his wife’s health.

A medical report from Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, confirms that interrupting Um Majed’s treatment poses a significant risk to her well-being. The report details her breast cancer diagnosis and emphasizes the necessity of continued care, contingent upon renewing her health insurance.

Abu Majed recounted the challenges his wife has faced since her diagnosis nearly three years ago. “She suffered from pain in her chest and a high fever. We didn’t know the cause at first,” he said. “When she noticed a lump in her left breast, we became very worried and took her to Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City for examination.”

He continued, “The doctor in the emergency room asked her to stay in the hospital for tests and analysis. They gave her pain medication to control the fever and alleviate the pain.”

“During her hospital stay, her condition stabilized, but the scan revealed a tumor in the left side of her chest. The doctor informed us that she needed specialized treatment, medication, and regular follow-ups,” Abu Majed explained. “I was able to cover the cost of treatment with the help of her health insurance, but it has now expired. I am currently unable to afford the ongoing costs of her treatment or renew her insurance due to my deteriorating financial situation.”

Abu Majed earns 10,000 AED per month working for a private company and is the sole provider for his family, which includes his elderly parents, whom he brought from Sudan due to the difficult living conditions and financial hardship there.

“I feel deeply saddened by my wife’s situation because I cannot afford her treatment or renew her health insurance, and I see her health deteriorating,” he said.

He has sought help from family and friends, but their circumstances are equally challenging. Abu Majed is now reaching out to philanthropists and compassionate individuals to help him cover the cost of renewing his wife’s health insurance and saving her life.
