Diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine continue, though recent discussions have yet to produce a breakthrough [[1]]. Following a meeting between U.S. officials and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow this week, both Washington and Kyiv are reaffirming their commitment to a negotiated peace that protects ukrainian sovereignty [[2]], [[3]]. The stalled progress comes amid growing public and political pressure – including from former President Trump – for a resolution to the protracted war in Europe.
Discussions are ongoing to “move towards a lasting and just peace.”
Ukrainian officials stated their priority remains securing an agreement that protects the nation’s independence and sovereignty, guarantees the safety of Ukrainian citizens, and establishes a stable foundation for a democratic and prosperous future, according to a joint statement released by the State Department and Ukrainian officials. Participants in the talks discussed the outcome of a meeting earlier this week between officials Witkoff and Kushner and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, as well as potential steps toward ending the war, the statement added.
The extensive discussions in Moscow on Tuesday did not yield any commitments regarding a potential peace agreement to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, a development that may exacerbate the increasing frustration of some, including former President Trump, with both Ukraine and Russia.
Trump has repeatedly expressed his view that bringing an end to Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II has been a particularly elusive foreign policy goal. He has at times publicly criticized both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
During this week’s conversations, U.S. and Ukrainian officials also “outlined a framework for security arrangements and discussed the necessary deterrence capabilities to sustain a lasting peace,” the State Department said, without providing further details. The development underscores the ongoing efforts to establish long-term security guarantees for Ukraine as the conflict continues.
