A new Linux distribution, VailuxOS, is aiming to bridge teh gap for Windows users considering a switch to the open-source operating system. Based on Ubuntu and sporting a Windows 11-inspired interface, the fledgling project focuses on ease of use and familiarity. Currently developed by a small team in germany, VailuxOS recently released version 1.5.1-built on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS-and is actively seeking contributors as it gains traction, including a recent deployment at a local school.

VailuxOS, a fledgling German Linux distribution based on Ubuntu, aims to simplify the transition for Windows users and newcomers to the Linux ecosystem. The project, currently spearheaded by a small team of three friends, is actively seeking contributors as it develops. The core goal is to provide a smooth and accessible pathway for users looking to switch operating systems.

The latest release, VailuxOS 1.5.1, builds upon Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS (“Noble Numbat”), featuring Linux 6.8 – which can also be upgraded to Linux 6.14 via the Hardware Enablement Stack – and the KDE Plasma 5.27 LTS desktop environment. To ease the transition for those coming from Windows, the distribution’s theme has been carefully designed to resemble Windows 11, offering a familiar visual experience.

VailuxOS is a Debian-based Linux operating system built on Ubuntu. Our main goal is to make the transition from Windows to Linux as seamless as possible by maintaining familiar workflows and methods.

The small development team behind VailuxOS is actively recruiting, and has already achieved an early success by deploying its operating system at the Geschwister-Scholl-Realschule in Nuremberg. This initial placement demonstrates the potential of the young project. Currently, the team is looking for a programmer to join the VailuxOS team. Further details about the ambitious undertaking are available on the official website.

The 5.1-gigabyte system image for VailuxOS 1.5.1 is now available for download and can be written to a USB drive using tools like Rufus or Ventoy. Users can then test the operating system in a live environment without installation, or proceed with a full installation to an SSD via the graphical installer. The growing popularity of Linux distributions tailored to specific user experiences reflects a broader trend of customization and accessibility in the open-source world.
