“We are still searching for 12 people,” he added.
Earlier data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) indicated 23 deaths in West Sumatra. The number of fatalities from flooding and landslides in North Sumatra has also increased, with the current reported death toll standing at 116.
“As of this afternoon, we have recorded 116 deaths across North Sumatra province, with 42 people still unaccounted for,” said Suharyanto during a live-streamed press conference on the BNPB Indonesia YouTube channel.
He stated that North Sumatra is the region most severely impacted by the disasters, which have been unfolding for the past four days. The widespread devastation underscores the vulnerability of communities to extreme weather events in the region.
