Horizon Europe Partnerships Invest Over €10 Billion in Research and Innovation

Brussels – Horizon Europe’s ten joint undertakings have allocated over €10.88 billion to research and innovation projects since 2021, including €5.91 billion directly from Horizon Europe funding, it was announced today.

The substantial investment has resulted in 636 Horizon Europe grants being awarded, engaging more than 5,000 organizations – companies, research centers, and universities – across various sectors. A significant portion, €2.48 billion, was directed towards digital research and innovation, followed by €2 billion for mobility and energy initiatives. Health research received €869.5 million, while the bioeconomy sector benefited from €528 million in funding.

These joint undertakings cover key strategic areas including clean aviation, hydrogen technologies, rail transport, healthcare advancements, and the bioeconomy, as well as specialized areas like air traffic management, smart networks, and semiconductor technology – often referred to as European Defence Fund. Two additional undertakings focus on metrology and collaborative research within the Mediterranean region. This level of funding signals a strong commitment to bolstering Europe’s technological independence and competitiveness on the global stage.

Officials stated that the investments are expected to drive significant advancements in these critical sectors and contribute to the EU’s broader goals of sustainability and economic growth. Further project evaluations and impact assessments are planned for early 2026 to determine the long-term effects of these initiatives; more information on Horizon Europe can be found at the European Commission’s website.
