Pokrovsk Faces Potential Fall to Russian Forces, Threatening Key Eastern Ukraine Supply Route

The eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk is at risk of falling to Russian forces, potentially marking Russia’s largest gain in months and furthering its control over the Donbas region.

Fighting around Pokrovsk, a vital road and rail junction in the Donetsk region, has intensified in recent weeks, with Russian troops reportedly infiltrating the city and gradually taking control of buildings and streets. While Kyiv maintains its forces are engaged in “active resistance,” open-source intelligence suggests significant portions of the city are now occupied by Moscow’s troops. A Ukrainian regiment, the “Skelya” assault regiment, stated yesterday they had cleared the city council building and raised the national flag, but reports indicate Ukrainian troops are outnumbered, with over 1,000 soldiers potentially at risk of encirclement.

Russia’s advance on Pokrovsk follows the capture of Avdiivka in February 2024, and seizing the city would open a path toward further territorial gains in the Donbas, including potential advances on Kostyantynivka and other key cities. The loss of Pokrovsk would severely hamper Ukraine’s logistical capabilities in the east, impacting its ability to resupply troops and maintain defensive positions. According to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Russian forces currently lack the momentum for a major breakthrough, but the creeping offensive poses a significant threat.

The potential fall of Pokrovsk could also influence ongoing diplomatic efforts, particularly with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has previously expressed a desire to negotiate an end to the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has consistently stated that Russia will need to fight for several more years to fully occupy the Donbas, a position supported by analysis from the Institute for the Study of War. Russian officials continue to seek a negotiated settlement, and a success in Pokrovsk may strengthen Moscow’s negotiating position.

Ukrainian officials stated today they are working to thwart Russian attempts to encircle their troops and will continue to defend the city, but acknowledged the challenging situation on the ground.
