A potential split within the European Union is emerging, as a new group of nations led by Italy, Germany, and Belgium plans to continue discussions on policy despite reservations from other member states. The development underscores growing divisions within the bloc as it navigates complex economic and political challenges.

The informal summit in Alden Biesen, Belgium, marked the initial steps toward a two-tiered European Union, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stating that the newly formed group will continue its work leading up to the next European Council meeting scheduled for March.

The group includes Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, and Hungary. France’s participation, while initially uncertain, was secured as President Emmanuel Macron opted to join the coalition despite earlier indications he might remain outside the core group, according to analysts.
