European Airlines Urge EU for Increased Sustainable Fuel Support
European airline CEOs are calling on EU policymakers to bolster support for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) following the recent implementation of fuel blending mandates, warning that current policies risk harming air travel accessibility.
At a meeting in Paris this week, leaders from the 17 member airlines of Airlines for Europe (A4E) – including Air France-KLM, IAG, Lufthansa, and Ryanair – issued a joint statement demanding “decisive action before the end of this year.” The call comes after the UK and EU introduced mandates requiring airlines to use at least 2 percent of alternative aviation fuel in all flights, a figure slated to rise to 6 percent by 2030 and 70 percent by 2050. The increasing cost of fuel is a significant factor for airlines and passengers alike, potentially impacting travel plans across the continent.
A4E argues that simply mandating SAF use isn’t enough to create a viable market, with airlines currently facing “excessive surcharges and no price transparency.” “Simply implementing mandates does not create a functioning SAF market, and European airlines are currently paying the price with excessive surcharges and no price transparency, making large-scale use in flight operations impractical,” the group stated. They also warned that the current policies could shift traffic and emissions outside of Europe, undermining the EU’s Fit for 55 decarbonisation strategy.
The association is requesting multi-year alternative fuel allowances, a simplified book-and-claim system, a market intermediary for alternative fuels, and a fairer distribution of costs between EU and non-EU airlines. “European airlines remain committed to decarbonising, but this should not come at the cost of competitiveness and accessible air travel for all,” A4E said. They are urging the European Commission to initiate a strategic dialogue for the aviation sector, warning that without immediate action, Europe’s competitive position will weaken. Officials stated that the European Commission will consider the concerns raised by A4E and assess potential reforms to ensure a sustainable and competitive aviation sector.
