Gemini AI Assistant Arrives on Sony Google TV Devices Ahead of Schedule

Google’s next-generation AI assistant, Gemini, is now appearing on some Sony Bravia Google TV devices, offering users an early glimpse of the feature before its planned wider release later this year.

Initially limited to the TCL QM9K series, which retails for around $3,000, Gemini is designed to replace the existing Google Assistant functionality on compatible TVs running Android 14. A user reported discovering the update yesterday and shared screenshots of the setup process, revealing details about data privacy, voice selection, and a disclaimer regarding the potential for inaccurate responses from generative AI. This rollout signifies Google’s commitment to integrating advanced AI directly into the home entertainment experience.

The setup includes a choice of ten distinct Gemini voices, differing slightly from those available on Android mobile devices but mirroring the options found on Nest speakers. Available voices include Bloom, Oxalis, Fern, Magnolia, Violet, Pothos, Calathea, Yarrow, Croton, and Amaryllis. Google last updated its Gemini voice options in September 2024, and continues to refine the experience across its platforms; you can learn more about Gemini’s capabilities on the official Google Developers site.

While the appearance of Gemini on a Sony device is currently an isolated report, it suggests the rollout is progressing beyond the initial TCL exclusivity. The user who discovered the update has a history of enabling early features on Samsung devices, but has not indicated any specific modifications were made to their TV. Google officials have stated they expect Gemini to become available on a broader range of devices later in 2025.

Google is continuing to test and refine the Gemini experience, with the company recently showcasing an outdated logo in promotional materials, indicating ongoing development.

Ahead of a promised wider rollout “later this year,” Gemini has shown up early for at least one Google TV user which offers a quick look at the setup process.

Google TV is adding Gemini as a replacement for Google Assistant, with new features and capabilities on the way. However, the upgraded AI assistant is currently only available on a single Google TV device – the TCL QM9K series, which starts at $3,000 (but is already $1,000 off). Officially, the expectation is that the feature will come to other devices “later this year” for devices running Android 14.

But it seems that we might be approaching a wider debut.

One Sony Bravia owner reports that Gemini for Google TV showed up on their TV. The user posted screenshots of Gemini’s setup process which includes more information on how it differs from the Assistant experience, a disclaimer around the irreliable nature of generative AI responses, a toggle for allowing Gemini to use personal data, and a prominent UI for picking the voice of Gemini on your TV. There are 10 total voices for Gemini on Google TV, matching the number found on mobile devices. The names and descriptions of Gemini voices on Google TV are a bit different from what you’ll find on mobile, though.

  • Pothos: Engaging, Mid-range
  • Calathea: Australian accent, Higher

The list of Gemini voices on Google TV doesn’t directly match the list on Android, but rather leverages the voices found on Nest speakers.

Google last updated the list of Gemini voices on mobile in September 2024, but made further changes to the voices available on speakers as recently as August of this year.

The correlation of Gemini voices on TV sharing the same list as speakers makes sense, and certainly provides a nice layer of cohesion between speakers and TVs, especially as Google TV sets with built-in “Hey Google” functionality are becoming abundant.

As it stands today, though, this is the only public-facing report we’ve found of Gemini going live on a Google TV device other than TCL’s new flagship. The user who spotted it has some history in enabling new features on Samsung devices, but there’s no claim being made about the TV. This does seem like it might an unfinished release, though, as the Gemini logos seen on the voice selection page haven’t been updated to Google’s new style. Then again, a recent video from Google on the feature also showed an outdated logo in use.
