Prince Andrew Stripped of Title, Royal Lodge as Palace Acknowledges Abuse Survivors
Buckingham Palace today announced that Prince Andrew, now known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, has been stripped of his royal title and will vacate the Royal Lodge, a move widely interpreted as an acknowledgment of the allegations made against him by Virginia Giuffre.
The palace statement, released yesterday, emphasized that “Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been and will remain with the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse.” Virginia Giuffre, who died earlier this year, had repeatedly alleged sexual abuse at the hands of Mountbatten Windsor, claims he consistently denied. Her brother, Sky Roberts, stated, “Absolutely, I think that he’s speaking very clearly in that statement when he says he’s with survivors out there. It’s an acknowledgment that something occurred, something has happened. There has been a shift.” This decision follows years of public scrutiny and damage to the monarchy’s reputation stemming from Mountbatten Windsor’s association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Giuffre’s sister-in-law, Amanda Roberts, described the palace’s statement as a “victory” and “vindication for our sister,” adding, “To put that acknowledgment out for survivors is huge. We haven’t seen that from anyone, and to acknowledge that there are survivors in this situation is an acknowledgment that abuse did occur.” Advocates for survivors of sexual assault have also welcomed the move, with Refuge CEO Gemma Sherrington stating it was “incredibly powerful to see survivors recognised so directly.” For those affected by sexual violence, resources are available through organizations like RAINN.
While many are praising the palace’s statement as a significant step, some argue it does not constitute sufficient accountability. The Fawcett Society’s Penny East noted that “Removing a title…can never be viewed as true accountability.” The palace has declined to offer further comment on the matter, and it remains unclear what future role, if any, Mountbatten Windsor will have within the royal family.
