NBA Returns to China with Nets and Suns Preseason Games in Macao

The NBA resumed games in China this week, as the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns completed two preseason matchups in Macao, marking the first NBA games played in the country since 2019.

The games, held at Venetian Arena in Macao – a special administrative region of China – were part of a five-year partnership between the NBA and Sands China. This return is significant as the NBA seeks to regain a foothold in a massive and lucrative market it largely lost following a diplomatic dispute.

The league’s relationship with China fractured in 2019 after then-Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey voiced support for pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, leading to Chinese sponsorships being pulled and games being removed from state television. Nets coach Jordi Fernández described the experience as “amazing,” stating after Sunday’s 111-109 Nets win, “It’s been an amazing experience… When you see the crowds and the excitement and how well they treated us, it makes it special.” Players also enjoyed local experiences, with Ziaire Williams noting the quality of the egg tarts and McDonald’s offerings. The NBA is now reportedly eyeing a return to games on the mainland as well, according to ESPN.

The Nets, partially due to owner Joe Tsai’s deep ties to China as the co-founder of Alibaba, have a particularly strong following in the country. The team also gave Chinese prospect Zeng Fanbo a training camp opportunity, though he was later waived. Cam Thomas highlighted the enthusiastic fan support, saying, “Probably the fan event [was the best part of the trip]… seeing how it was a sold-out crowd, so that was dope to see and be a part of.” You can find more information about the Nets’ roster here.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has indicated the league is committed to rebuilding its presence in China, and officials are optimistic about the success of this initial return.
