To maximize their chances of success at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Italy, Swedish biathletes Hanna Öberg and Martin Ponsiluoma are prioritizing health and training by limiting contact with family during the holiday season. This strategic decision comes as athletes prepare for both individual events and relay races, aiming to secure a medal.

Öberg, who recently achieved a significant victory in the sprint event in Annecy, France on December 14th, ending a 1005-day winning streak, explained the reasoning behind the choice. “We want to increase our chances of staying healthy, because I’ve gotten sick about three times after visiting family,” she told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. Maintaining peak physical condition is crucial for Olympic athletes, and even a mild illness can significantly impact performance.

“Therefore, Martin and I will be spending Christmas in the Seefeld area. We want to rest and then train well. I think it’s the right decision,” Öberg added. The rest of the Swedish biathlon team has opted to travel home to be with their families for the holidays.

The biathlon World Cup schedule includes three consecutive events in January: Oberhof, Germany (January 5th-11th), Ruhpolding, Germany (January 12th-18th), and Nové Město na Moravě, Czech Republic (January 19th-25th). The Olympic biathlon competitions are set to begin on February 8th with the mixed relay event.
