UK Evacuates Nationals From Jamaica After Devastating Hurricane Melissa

A chartered flight is set to depart Kingston, Jamaica today, November 1, 2025, to evacuate approximately 8,000 British nationals following the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Melissa.

The evacuation comes as the UK has committed £7.5 million in emergency aid to the region, including matching public donations up to £1 million to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent, with King Charles and Queen Camilla among those contributing. Despite the arrival of aid, distribution has been severely hampered by blocked roads after the Category 5 hurricane ravaged parts of Jamaica, resulting in at least 19 confirmed fatalities. The scale of the disaster highlights the increasing vulnerability of Caribbean nations to extreme weather events.

Yesterday, Jamaica’s Information Minister Dana Morris Dixon described scenes of widespread devastation, stating, “there are entire communities that seem to be marooned and areas that seem to be flattened.” The UK Foreign Office is urging citizens to register their presence and contact airlines for commercial travel options. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper announced the increased funding package, explaining it came as “more information is now coming through on the scale of devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, with homes damaged, roads blocks and lives lost.” The British Red Cross confirmed the royal donation will support critical search and rescue efforts and provide access to essential resources like healthcare and clean water.

Significant damage has been reported to healthcare infrastructure, with the Black River Hospital in St Elizabeth requiring complete relocation, according to Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton. Aid organizations, such as Global Empowerment Mission, are beginning to reach affected areas, but challenges remain in delivering supplies due to impassable roads and widespread power outages. Authorities assure that further assistance is on its way.

Officials stated that efforts are focused on restoring essential services and providing ongoing support to those impacted by the hurricane.
