Greta Thunberg, Hundreds of Activists Arrested Attempting Humanitarian Aid Delivery to Gaza

Climate activist Greta Thunberg and 436 other individuals were arrested last week by Israeli officials while participating in a maritime mission to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, which has been under a 16-year naval blockade.

The group, sailing as the Global Sumud Flotilla comprised of 42 vessels and participants from 44 countries, departed Europe in late August. Since the arrests, over 100 crew members have been deported, with numerous detainees reporting mistreatment including threats, beatings, and denial of basic necessities like food, water, and medical care. One Spanish activist told Reuters, “At any time that any of us called a police officer, we risked that seven or more fully armed people entered to our cell, as they did on mine, pointing us with weapons at our heads, with dogs ready to attack us, and being dragged to the floor.” Lawyers with the Israeli human-rights organization Adalah stated that the crew members’ rights were “systematically violated.”

Reports allege Thunberg was specifically targeted during her detention. Turkish journalist Ersin Celik claimed Israeli forces “dragged little Greta by her hair before our eyes, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag,” while Italian journalist Lorenzo Agostino said she was “wrapped in an Israeli flag and exhibited like a trophy.” An email from the Swedish Foreign Ministry, reviewed by The Guardian, detailed Thunberg’s experience with “dehydration,” “insufficient amounts of both water and food,” and potential bedbug bites. This incident adds to growing international scrutiny of Israel’s actions in Gaza, where a recent report by the UN suggests potential war crimes are being committed.

Far-right Israeli national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir defended the treatment of the activists, stating, “Anyone who supports terrorism is a terrorist and deserves the conditions of terrorists.” The Israel Foreign Ministry denied any abuses occurred, asserting that all detainees were provided with necessities and legal access. Thunberg, who was previously detained during a similar aid mission in June, was deported to Greece yesterday and, during a press conference today, declined to discuss her personal experience, stating, “Israel is escalating genocide and mass destruction with genocidal intent, attempting to erase an entire population in front of our eyes.” Twenty-one Americans remain imprisoned in Israel.
