French Court Increases Jail Term in Landmark Drugging and Rape Case

A French court today increased the prison sentence for Husamettin Dogan, one of the men convicted in the case involving Gisèle Pelicot, a woman drugged unconscious by her husband and repeatedly raped by men he recruited online.

The court of appeal in Nîmes extended Dogan’s original nine-year sentence to ten years after rejecting his claim of innocence, despite graphic video evidence presented during the trial. Dogan, 44, had argued he was “trapped” by Dominique Pelicot, Gisèle’s husband, and that his actions did not constitute rape. Public prosecutor Dominique Sié had requested a 12-year term, stating Dogan was “unwilling to take responsibility” for a “massive act of destruction of a woman.”

Gisèle Pelicot, 72, testified this week, stating, “I am the only victim,” and denying any consent to the acts committed against her. She recounted discovering the abuse only after viewing the videos filmed by her husband. The case gained international attention due to the unprecedented nature of the evidence and the scale of the abuse, highlighting the devastating impact of domestic coercive control. Pelicot also addressed her strained relationship with her daughter, Caroline Darian, who alleges she was also abused by her father, saying, “I hope [Caroline] finds the answers she is looking for.” You can learn more about the dynamics of sexual violence from the United Nations.

Of the 51 men initially convicted last December, only Dogan pursued an appeal to the court. The investigation was made possible by the videos Dominique Pelicot created while committing the crimes. This case underscores the importance of forensic evidence in prosecuting sexual assault, and the challenges faced by victims in coming forward. Officials stated that the court will continue to monitor the cases of the remaining convicted men and provide support to Gisèle Pelicot and her family as they navigate the aftermath of this harrowing ordeal.
