Arizona State Quarterback Sam Leavitt Out for Season with Injury

Arizona State University starting quarterback Sam Leavitt will miss the remainder of the football season due to a lingering injury requiring surgery, a significant setback for the Sun Devils’ Big 12 campaign.

Head coach Kenny Dillingham announced the news today during an interview, stating Leavitt has been battling the issue for some time. While specific details of the injury haven’t been released, Dillingham emphasized Leavitt’s dedication, saying, “He’s been battling and fighting. He’s the ultimate competitor.” Leavitt initially injured his foot against Baylor on September 20th and re-aggravated it during last Saturday’s 24-16 loss to Washington State after taking a hard hit in the first quarter.

Leavitt, who has thrown for over 1,600 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, briefly returned to the game against Washington State but left limping in the fourth quarter and was seen in a walking boot at practice earlier this week. The Sun Devils have already been dealing with injuries to key players, including wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury sustained in the win over Texas Tech on October 18th. College football injuries can dramatically alter a team’s trajectory, impacting their chances for bowl eligibility and conference success.

Arizona State will now turn to sixth-year senior Jeff Sims as they prepare to face Iowa State on Saturday in a rematch of the Big 12 title game. Kick-off is scheduled for 10 a.m. Dillingham added, “I just feel bad for him that he has been dinged up all year and he’s been battling for our football team.” You can find more information about the NCAA Football season here.
