Syria is maintaining a calculated neutrality in the face of escalating regional tensions, according to President Ahmed al-Sharaa. The statement comes as concerns grow about the potential for wider conflict in the Middle East, and highlights Damascus’s delicate balancing act as it navigates complex geopolitical relationships.
Speaking after prayers marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on March 20, 2026, al-Sharaa emphasized that Syria’s current position is the result of careful consideration of international and regional politics.
“We calculate our steps with extreme precision. And we always have a golden balance that weighs every position that Syria currently takes. I believe that, with God’s help, Syria’s current path is still in the right direction,” al-Sharaa said.
Al-Sharaa too indicated that his government is striving to keep Syria as far removed as possible from any conflict that could reopen old wounds.
“We are trying to maintain the country’s course of development and reconstruction as much as possible,” he stated.
