Gaza War Ends, Trump Announces Regional Normalization as Hostage Release Begins
The war in Gaza has concluded, with a ceasefire holding and the release of Israeli hostages expected to begin today, as President Donald Trump declared the Middle East is poised for “normalization” upon his arrival in Israel.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Israel, Trump stated, “The war is over, you understand that,” and expressed optimism about the region’s future, predicting, “I think it’s going to normalize.” The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas entered its third day, paving the way for the exchange of hostages and Palestinian prisoners. Thousands of Palestinians are already traveling north towards Gaza City, hopeful for a lasting peace after two years of conflict that has left much of the territory devastated. This conflict stemmed from the October 7, 2023, surprise attack by Hamas militants on Israel, triggering the initial military response.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed the hopeful sentiment, stating in a televised address, “Tomorrow is the beginning of a new path. A path of building, a path of healing, and I hope – a path of uniting hearts.” Israel anticipates the release of 20 living hostages early Monday morning, followed by the handover of the remains of 28 deceased hostages. Government spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian confirmed Israel is prepared to receive the released hostages as soon as they are transferred. The United States has played a key role in mediating the agreement, alongside Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey – you can learn more about the history of U.S. involvement in the region here.
President Trump is scheduled to address the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, and will then travel to Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, for a world leaders’ summit focused on solidifying the peace agreement. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will also attend the summit, according to a senior Palestinian official cited by Axios. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz indicated that once the hostages are returned, the military will focus on destroying Hamas’s network of underground tunnels in Gaza. The release of Palestinian prisoners, including some convicted of serious crimes, is also underway; a full list of those to be released can be found on the Israeli government website.
Officials stated that the release of hostages will continue throughout the day, and the world leaders’ summit in Egypt will focus on establishing a framework for long-term stability in the region.
